Course grade planning tool
Final Exam Calculator
Estimate the grade you need on a final exam from your current course average, your target overall grade, and the final exam weight.
Inputs
Current grade, goal, and exam weight
This final exam grade calculator assumes the rest of the course average is already captured in your current grade.

Required score summary
Formula used
Required final score = (target grade - current grade × non-final weight) ÷ final exam weight.
The calculator treats all weights as percentages of the whole course grade. Convert category weights before using the result.
How to use the final exam calculator
- Enter your current course grade before the final exam.
- Enter the overall course grade you want to finish with.
- Enter the percentage weight of the final exam.
- Review the required final exam score and whether it falls between 0 and 100 percent.
- Check your syllabus for extra credit, curves, or dropped work before relying on the result.
What the result means
If the required final exam grade is between 0 and 100 percent, the target is possible within the stated grading model. If it is above 100 percent, the target may be unrealistic unless your instructor offers extra credit, a curve, or another adjustment.
A result below 0 percent means your current coursework already secures the target grade even with a very low score on the final. Many students still aim higher to leave room for rounding and grading uncertainty.
Review checklist
- Make sure your current grade already includes every non-final category.
- Use the final exam weight from the syllabus, not an estimate from memory.
- Check whether your instructor rounds or curves final course grades.
- Adjust for extra credit, participation, or dropped assignments outside the main formula.
- Use multiple scenarios if you want a conservative and an optimistic target.
Planning notes
When the result looks impossible
An impossible result does not always mean the calculator is wrong. It can mean the target overall grade is no longer reachable with the current coursework average and the stated final exam weight.
In that case, compare several realistic course-grade goals, speak with the instructor about the grading formula, or decide whether a passing target is more practical than the original grade goal.
FAQ
Final exam calculator questions
What if my required final exam grade is above 100 percent?
That usually means your target overall grade is not reachable within the stated weighting system. Recheck the current grade, target grade, final weight, and any extra credit or curve rules.
Can I use letter grades instead of percentages?
This calculator expects numeric percentages. If your school uses letter grades, first convert them using the course grading scale or ask the instructor for the current numeric average.
Does the calculator include extra credit?
No. Add extra credit manually by adjusting the current grade or target scenario only when you know how the instructor applies it.
